Anouk Aimée was a French actress. Known for her “melancholy” femme fatale persona, her roles include the films La Dolce Vita, Lola (1961), 8½, A Man and a Woman, Justine (1969), A Leap in the Dark, Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man, A Man and a Woman: 20 Years Later, Bethune: The Making of a Hero, Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter), One Hundred and One Nights, and Festival in Cannes, and the mini-series Napoléon (2002). She appeared in over seventy films, working in France as well as Italy, Spain, the U.K., the U.S., and Germany. She was also known simply as Anouk.
Anouk was the daughter of actors Geneviève Sorya (born Geneviève Marie Thérèse Durand) and Henri Dreyfus/Henry Murray. Her father was born in Compiègne, Oise, Hauts-de-France, to a Jewish family, whose roots can be traced back in Alsace to the 1600s. Her mother was born in Paris, Île-de-France, and was Catholic. She had a daughter with her former husband, Ethiopian-born Greek filmmaker Nikos Papatakis.
It is stated that Anouk was raised in her mother’s Catholic faith, and formally converted to Judaism as an adult. It is not clear if this is accurate.
Anouk’s paternal grandfather was Jacques Dreyfus (the son of David Dreyfus and Rachel Ebstein). Jacques was born in Rixheim, Haut-Rhin, Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine. He was killed in the Holocaust in Auschwitz, in 1944. David was the son of Henri Dreyfus and Rebecque Gintzburger. Rachel was the daughter of Jacques Lévy-Ebstein and Sara Picard.
Anouk’s paternal grandmother was Valérie Schuhl (the daughter of Henri Schuhl and Rosalie Lehmann). Valérie was born in Benfeld, Bas-Rhin, Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine. Henri was born in Westhouse, the son of Moïse Schuhl and Adel/Adèle Hirstel. Rosalie was born in Zellwiller, the daughter of Abraham Judah dit Eckleimé Lehmann and Esther Adèle Gugenheim.
Anouk’s maternal grandfather was named André Hippolyte Durand (the son of Jeanne Marie Durand). André was born in Paris. Jeanne was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Edouard Durand and Alexandrine Antoinette Bouvenne.
Anouk’s maternal grandmother was Émilie Marguerite Mélanie Boussiron (the daughter of Jean Boussiron and Marie Mélanie Portin). Émilie was born in Angoulême, Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Jean was the son of Jean Boussiron and Marguerite Delord. Marie was the daughter of Francois Portin and Marguerite Soumagne.
